Children's Colouring Competition

A big thank you for everyone who sent in their super pictures for the Colouring Competition - they were all were so colourful and artistic, making it very hard to select a winner.  In the end there were 2 joint winners selected from the under 6's category who were Finlay from Mill Road and Charlie from Masefield Crescent.  The over 6 winner was Evie from Ladygrove.  A prize for all the winners!

Well done to you all -  all pictures are on display in the common room.

Ivy Update - Drayton Road / Burton Close alleyway

In the newsletter, we reported that Oxfordshire County Council Highways had said the problem of the partially blocked footpath between Drayton Road and Burton Close was not their responsibility. We complained to them about this strange statement as they have a duty to deal with obstructed footpaths. We eventually got a reply, saying what they meant was the ivy was not their responsibility! They say that they have written twice to the developer of The Poplars about the ivy from the fence around this property but have not had a response (neither did we when we wrote to the developer.) What we want to see now is action by OCC, not a series of letters.

We will continue to keep a close eye on this problem.

Appeal for Witnesses following a Burglary in Abingdon

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses following a burglary in Chaunterell Way, Abingdon.

Between 8.30pm - 8.55pm on Tuesday 19th November a property on Chaunterell Way was broken into.  Offenders stole car keys from inside and took the Mercedes car that was parked on the drive, partial registration SSA ***

Designated Investigator Christopher Leech, based at Abingdon Police Station, said "I am appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident to please come forward.  I am particularly interested in speaking with the member of the public who parked their car at the side of the property and got out with their two dogs and walked towards the park.  Anyone with information can contact Police on the non-emergency number 101 or report this online quoting reference number 43190361504.  Alternatively you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111'".

Halloween Safety Advice

This is a message from the South and Vale Neighbourhood Teams about Halloween.

We will be carrying out high-visibility patrols over Halloween to deal with any incidents of anti-social behaviour.

Here’s some simple advice to help you have a fun and safe Halloween:

• Young children should never go out trick or treating without being accompanied by an adult.
• Don’t knock on the doors of strangers; only go to the houses of people you know.
• Never go into a stranger’s house.
• Keep to well-lit areas, wear bright colouring and carry a torch.
• Remember road safety advice.
• Take care not to frighten elderly or vulnerable people.
• If a house is displaying a “no trick or treat” sign please don’t knock on the door.
• Children don’t be offended if your local shop does not serve you with eggs or flour. We have been working with local stores to discourage their sale to young people.

If at any point you do feel nervous or unsafe:

• Don’t open your door if you’re unsure who is there. Use your spy-hole, look out of a window, and use your door chain if you decide to open your door.
• Have a contact number of a close relative or good neighbour by your telephone, just in case you need to phone them.
• If you are part of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, let your co-ordinator know that you will be on your own at Halloween.  If you are a co-ordinator, please identify people in your scheme that may be vulnerable and offer them reassurance.

Thames Valley Police will not tolerate any anti-social behaviour at any time of the year.

To report anti-social behaviour please call the 24 hour non-emergency number on 101.  If it is a crime in progress, call 999 immediately.

With millions of people living with food poverty, Abingdon now has a Community fridge which accepts surplus food from local businesses or members of the public to make if freely available to all community members.

Anyone can collect food from the fridge all year round on Monday - Friday 9.30am - 3.30pm at the Abbey Centre off Audlette Drive.  Press the buzzer to be let in.

Balloon

A resident from Masefield Crescent sent in this lovely photo of an air balloon that landed in the farmers field behind their house.  The last time one landed some years ago, it just missed houses and landed behind garden fences in the playing field and then dragged along a little until the balloon was deflated.
